5 Tips to Make Your Blog More Visually Appealing

Fonts.com

When someone finds a new blog, one of the first indicators they get about whether it is worth returning to is how it looks. A blog full of incoherent page elements that don’t seem to tie together can leave a reader feeling confused and drive them away before they even start looking at content. Luckily, there are a few simple things you can do to make sure your blog stands out visually without being a mess.

Tips to Make Blog More Visually Appealing

1. Stick With Your Theme

When you choose the color and theme for your blog, be careful to make sure you carry the same elements through every page. You don’t have to use the defaults that come with the theme, but when you replace a color scheme make sure you replace it with something that looks consistent and matches any widgets your theme came with. If your theme comes with a patterned or visually busy background or header, be careful to make sure colors you use to replace the defaults work well with these elements.

2. Make Your Own Header

Your readers will be looking at whatever is at the top of your blog to get an idea of what kind of content you are providing. Use the header section to make sure this information is as obvious as possible. Without a strong header, your blog will look like one of the many generic default layout setups available online right now.

3. Stay Organized

One aspect of having a visually appealing blog that is often overlooked is usability. Some very simple blog setups end up looking great visually simply because they are easy to read and navigate. Make sure your blog has a well organized archive section that will let readers find old posts by date, category, or both. If you have any information you need to give new readers, make it easily accessible from an obvious link on the front page of your blog.

4. Use Readable Fonts

One of the easiest traps to fall into when trying to design a visually interesting blog is choosing a font that may not look good on other monitors. Remember that everyone does not read internet text at the same resolution and try to stick to a font that is simple and easy to read. One good option is leaving the font selection screen alone entirely and allowing readers to browse your site with the default font. If you’re going for a more controlled look, consider how your font will appear stepped up or down a size and from further away.

5. Simple Is Good

Readers come to your blog to check out the content you are providing, not to see your visual effects. The area where you post text should be uncluttered and easy to read. Avoid putting any kind of background image that is more complicated than textured paper directly behind your post. Make sure the colors you use for your text and your background have a strong contrast, like a white background for black text. Considering your blog’s readability as your first concern is a great way to make it visually appealing without loosing function.
